Practice for the
1963 Aintree '200' is over, Jim Clark nonchanantly manoeuvres his
beautiful and highly effective Lotus 25 on the cinder surface of the
paddock.
It was a time when a
young lad might easily encounter his heroes. On raceday morning I
came across Jim and a friend engrossed in a book. I heard him remark
"That's a bit naughty!" Sensing that this inquisitive youth
was itching to sneak a peek, he graciously lowered the book, allowing
me to see a full page image of him at the previous year's British
Grand Prix, inches from the camera, with both inside wheels on the
grass. The caption read: "Farmer goes grazing. Jim Clark takes
a shortcut through Melling Crossing on his last, winning lap."
